My freshman year of high school, I made a conscious decision that I was going to play college basketball. From that moment, I never stopped fighting for my dream. For three straight summers there wasn’t a day I wasn’t in the gym trying to get stronger, get better. But during my senior year of high school, with no Division 1 offers, I decided to accept an academic scholarship to the University of Michigan with the goal of making the team as a walk-on.
It wasn’t so easy. Despite my hard work, I didn’t make the cut – two years in a row. But the more work I put in, the harder it was to surrender. So I gave it another shot. And on my third try, I made the team.
Two years later I was named co-captain. That same year we went to the NCAA tournament for the first time in eleven years.
As a captain, I learned the importance of selflessness. It's about forgetting yourself by giving yourself. Sacrificing personal motives and goals for those of the team. No matter how any of us felt on a certain day, we had to give our all because the success of the team was dependent upon the efforts of each player. I saw firsthand the importance of individuals mobilizing as one unit, yet recognizing the distinct value of each person. I keep those experiences with me every day as I work on my new dream: I Miss You, Inc. and the IMU brand.
During my last season on the Michigan Basketball Team, while on the road playing a tournament at Madison Square Garden, I received a text message that said “IMU.” That I immediately identified the letters to mean "I miss you" struck a chord within me. Since that time, God has blessed me with a vision to take those simple three letters to great heights.
Even at a young age, I envisioned myself making a difference in the world and defying the so-called norm. That’s why, to me, IMU isn’t about selling t-shirts. I’m so passionate about this company because I believe in its message of happiness. I believe this is a movement that can transform communities and change the way people view the world. It’s a challenge to all of us. And I’m ready to take it on.
