Nature Clean Up

IMU had a great time volunteering with Washtenaw County Parks Sunday afternoon from 2-4pm at Parker Mill off Geddes Rd. in Ann Arbor, MI. We spent our time working underneath a huuugeeee oak tree we learned has probably been there since at least the 1820s. We were pulling invasive weeds (mostly bitter cress) from this wooded area in the park. Parks Naturalist, Shawn Severance, was a great leader and teacher. We learned about the land's history, invasive weeds, the vitality of insects in nature, poison ivy, forest burns, and so much more.

IMU & Washtenaw County Parks Service Event

This Sunday from 2-4pm IMU will be heading out to Parker Mill in Ann Arbor, MI on a community service project with Washtenaw County Parks. We will be pulling invasive weeds such as garlic mustard, dames rocket and bitter cress! Parks Naturalist, Shawn Severance, assured me that this is “fun and easy work, though there may be mosquitoes.” Mosquitoes won’t stop IMU though! Don’t let them stop you either!

Food Gatherers

Saturday morning brought another great volunteer opportunity IMU's way. Almost 20 IMU volunteers came together to help at the Food Gatherers warehouse from 9-11am. In just those two hours, we learned a lot about the amazing work the organization does every day, received a full warehouse tour, constructed countless boxes, and packed 9000 pounds of food (that's 4.5 tons!) for The Emergency Food Assistance Program.

Konal Family

University of Michigan vs. Penn State. Crisler Arena. Saturday, February 20th, 2010. 6pm.

I was sitting at will-call anticipating the arrival of some special guests from Kids Kicking Cancer as I watched thousands of fans pour into Crisler Arena decked out in maize and blue. The final Kids Kicking Cancer family to arrive was the Konal's - Jeff, Lori, Eyan, and Caden. Each of them with a Michigan hat and a specialty t-shirt designed by the family to help raise money for 5 year old Eyan's foundation.
