IMU traveled to Thirkell Elementary on February 25th, 2010, to conclude our MLK Expressions Contest. After our first visit to Thirkell on January 26th, we returned to present the winners of the contest. We held two assemblies: the first was for all 2nd and 3rd grade classes, the second for all 4th and 5th grade classes. Here we were able to reveal art and story winners for each group, as well as have David Mitchell and Alice Thompson of Black Family Development speak on what it was like living through the 60's. Congratulations to Victoria Shipman (2nd/3rd grade art winner), Serenity Fairchild (2nd/3rd grade story winner), Antanesha Wright (4th/5th grade art winner), and Re'Ojsha Martin (4th/5th grade story winner)!
Each winner received two free passes to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The art winners also received a private coaching session with local artist Geiric Laput, while the story winners received a private coaching session with local author Jean Alicia Elster. The Beyond Basics classroom was also presented with a compilation book including all semi-finalist entries (more than 30 pages of material!). The contest was a huge success, and we are so thankful to Beyond Basics and Thirkell Elementary! Stay tuned for video from the assemblies!
