MLK EXPRESSIONS Contest

IMU is celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting an Expressions’ Contest at Thirkell Elementary in Detroit, MI. The contest was announced this past Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 and will be facilitated through the Beyond Basics Publishing Center program within the school. Participating students have been asked to write either a short story about MLK and his life, or create a visual representation through art on the same topic. With the help of publishing center volunteers in the school on Tuesday, January 26th all students will have the opportunity to receive assistance in the editing and beautification of their entries. During February, Black History Month (Date TBA), IMU will make a presentation of the winners as well as bring individuals who were alive during the time of MLK to share their experiences with the children. This contest is an opportunity for young people to take a historical topic and creatively express what they have learned as well as learn from older generations about a significant time in American history.

IMU is reaching out to YOU. We need 20 volunteers to sign up to accompany us on Tuesday, January 26th to Thirkell Elementary. We will be working with the students on their projects from 9am-3pm and invite you to please sign up for at least one of the following shifts: 9-11am, 11am-1pm, and/or 1-3pm. To sign up please email imu@imutheinsideout.com by Monday, January 25th.
